Notes on Greek Stories
These are notes from the stories we read in class.  Refer to your Greek myth packets for notes and descriptions of the individual Gods.

1.  The story of Cronos and his defeat

Cronos- married to Rhea
Children:  Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon & Zeus

•  A Titan and Father of the Gods
•  Killed his own father, Oranos with a scythe
•  Oranos declared Cronos would also be defeated by his children
•  Cronos swallow his children to protect himself, but swallowed a rock instead of Zeus (click here to see an artists' rendition of Cronos (Saturn) devouring his sons!

Zeus brought back to the kingdom as a cupbearer--tricks Cronos into drinking poison and frees
his siblings--defeats Cronos in battle by getting help from his cousins:  the Cyclops and the Hundred Handed One

2.  Hera's rebellion against Zeus

Hera - Zeus' wife & sister, Queen of the Gods
    Children:  Ares, Eric, Hephaestus (Vulcan)

Hera angry with Zeus for infidelities--plots against him and is punished by being hung in the sky with golden chains.

3.  Athena & Arachne

Athena is the daughter of Zeus and Metis.  Born, full grown and dressed in armor from Zeus' head.  She taught man numbers, how to use tools (invented ax, plow, wheel, sail, etc).  Taught woman to weave and spin.  Master strategist--led captains to battle and gave judges wisdom.  Enemy of Ares (Mars) and Goddess of the intellect and wisdom.

Arachne:  famous weaver and spinner.  Full of pride, she lost a spinning contest to Athena and hung herself.  Athena turned her into a spider (so she could weave unchallenged) --thus--arachnids!
From this story we see 1).  Gods are jealous beings.  2). Pride comes before th fall.  Avoid conceit!
