Five Finger Method for Evaluating Web Site

Consider the following questions when trying to determine if a web site’s information is reliable.

1.  Who published the web site?  If the author is not listed their information may be inaccurate.
2.  What is the site’s content?  What is the content based on?  Is this site one made up of someone’s opinions, facts, or research?
3.  What type of site is it?
 .com= commercial site, ie:  they are selling something!
 .edu= educational site, ie:  they are associated with some type of school
 .gov= government site, ie:  they are affiliated with local, state or federal government agencies
 .org= organization, usually a non-profit organization
4.  When was the site published?  When was it last updated?  Can you find these dates easily?  If not, you may not know how old or how accurate the information is!
5.  Where is the site located or where is the author affiliated?  Is the site published from a “free web site” net?  Does the author work for a school or university?
6.   How is the material presented?  Do the graphics and other multi-media effects contribute to the design and MEANING of the material presented or do they take away from it?  Are reference materials included?  An email link to the author or webmaster?
